Building Resilience: why outdoor education is essential for students

For many students, a school camp marks their first experience away from home, off the grid, and outside their comfort zone. It’s where resilience isn’t just discussed — it’s lived.

At The Collaroy Centre, we see resilience emerge not as a single moment, but as a series of decisions, reflections, and breakthroughs that happen over time.

Whether your group is with us for a single day, a two-night camp, or a longer stay, the emotional journey often follows the same path: excitement, uncertainty, challenge, and—ultimately—confidence.

Here’s how we see that journey unfold.

Arrival: The Wobble

The bus pulls in. Bags are unpacked. The nerves are real.

Some students bounce in, excited for the adventure ahead. Others hang back, unsure. The first challenge? Settling in. Sharing space. Navigating a new environment. Stepping outside familiar routines.

This is the start of the resilience journey—adjusting to change. And while it can feel uncomfortable, it doesn’t take long for those first signs of confidence to emerge. A small win. A shared laugh. A new connection.

Activity Time: The Leap

Whether it’s the Giant Swing, High Ropes Challenge, or Abseiling, students are invited to face a challenge—and decide how far they want to go.

Not everyone climbs to the top. And that’s okay. What matters most is that students are given the opportunity to push their own limits, in their own way, with support from peers and staff.

Courage grows when students realise they don’t have to be fearless—they just have to try.

Mid-Experience: The Reset

No matter the length of camp, there’s always a moment when things feel harder. Maybe a team challenge didn’t go as planned. Maybe someone felt left out or unsure.

This is where the most important growth happens.

In activities like Raft Building, Survival Skills, or Team Initiatives, students must communicate, compromise, and reset. Staff guide reflective discussions, encouraging students to look inward and learn from the experience.

Resilience forms not just in success—but in how students recover and move forward when things don’t go perfectly.

Connection: The Support

As the group settles into a rhythm, you can see the shift. Students who were quiet are stepping up. Friendships are deepening.

A walk along our bush trails, time spent at Narrabeen Lagoon, or even a team game on the oval becomes a space for informal connection. These quieter moments build resilience too—teaching students that connection and community help us stay strong.

Departure: The Shift

Whether it’s the end of a single day or the final morning of a multi-night stay, students leave The Collaroy Centre changed.

They’ve navigated something new. They’ve experienced challenge, supported others, and been supported in return. They’ve discovered that they are capable, adaptable, and more resilient than they thought.

And the best part? They carry that confidence back into the classroom, the playground, and beyond.

Why outdoor education matters

Resilience isn’t just a nice-to-have skill—it’s essential. It helps students manage change, bounce back from setbacks, and approach challenges with confidence.

At The Collaroy Centre, we design camp experiences that encourage students to explore their limits, connect with others, and reflect on their growth—all in a safe and supportive environment.

It doesn’t take five days to change a mindset. Sometimes, it only takes one.
