Description: A perfect way to complete the adventurous journeys component of your Duke’s award. There is a compulsory briefing session for all of our journeys to help students to prepare. These sessions begin at 7 pm and are held at The Collaroy Centre, Homestead Ave, Collaroy
Cost: $1800.00 per person (The cost will include all tranfers in New Zealand, accommodation and campsite fees. Airfares to and from Christchurch are additional) IMPORTANT! 50% Deposit required by 18th November, 2011 to secure your position. Price does not include Flights to and from Christchurch.Itinerary: Day 1
| | Travel to Christchurch. Prepare for first hike. Overnight in Christchurch | | Day 2 -5 | | Complete your practice hike by hiking through the Arthurs Pass National Park. Located on the eastern side of the South Island. This area is known for its deep river valleys and spectacular passes before spending night 5 at Hamner Springs | Day 6 | | A well deserved day of rest and relaxation in Kaikoura. This will include time for reprovisioning and preparing for your final trek. | Day 7-10
| | Complete your qualifying expedition by summitting Mt Tapuenuku (2885 m) the highest peak in the Kaikoura ranges. This is a trekking peak and as such no rock climbing experience is required. Celabratory dinner in Christchurch on night 10. | | Day 11 | | Depart Christchurch for Sydney. |
Transportation: Students will have the option of travelling on the same flight as your Collaroy Instructor. Alternatively, a time and place will be arranged to meet at Christchurch Airport. Equipment required:
- Tent and Ground Sheet
- Eating Utensils
- Cooking Equipment
- Sleeping Mat
- Water bottles(3L)
- Thermal Top and Bottom (mandatory safety regulation)
- Fleece / Woollen Jumper
- Rain jacket
- Clothes – old clothes x 2 (preferably non cotton)
- Backpack + garbage bags (3)
- Sleeping Bag
- Food (see suggested menu)
- Shoes
- Socks (preferably woollen)
- Compass
- Insect repellent /sunscreen / toilet paper.
- Hat
- Torch
- Pencil & paper
- Record Book
Please note: * You will not be able to carry certain equipment on any flights (eg. matches, lighters, stove fuel, fresh food). There will be time before each hike to purchase anything that you require. *We can supply equipment, hire charges will apply *Good quality rain jackets are available for purchase from The Collaroy Centre. *Please make sure that you are familiar with your own equipment prior to your expedition. It is important that you pack as light as possible as you will be carrying everything that you bring. Most people bring too much food the first time that they go out on a hike. Please remember: We will be camping away from civilization, so anything that requires refrigeration is not appropriate to bring i.e. Fresh meat (especially chicken).
Breakfast
| Any of the following – cereal (individual serving packets are the best), powdered milk, porridge, lavish bread, spreads, fruit juice (popper).
| | Lunch | Option 1- Sandwiches prepared at home, fruit juice (popper), fruit and/or packet of chips.
Option 2 -Any of the following – lavish bread, tuna, Kraft Cheddar Cheese, tinned ham, Rivitta biscuits, spreads. | | Dinner | Option 1 – Packet of Continental Pasta and Sauce, Deb Potato and Gravy, Cup-a-Soup, Cottee’s Instant Pudding – chocolate.
Option 2 – for the more adventurous….Vegetable Stir Fry: Two Minute Noodles x 2, half an onion, carrot, broccoli, (or any other vegetables you like), tin of kidney beans, Maggie Powder Seasoning Mix (any flavour you like), Cottee’s Instant Pudding – chocolate.
Option 3 – Packet of Continental Risotto, tinned ham, tinned fruit and instant custard. | | Trail Mix | Nuts, Muesli Bars, snacks & hot drinks if required. |
